Turnout Remains Light In Democratic And Republican Primaries For Public Service Commission Races With Final Voting On Tuesday

***Ballots Cast 36.2 Percent Democratic, 63.8 Percent Republican***

Leading up to election day voting on Tuesday, only 2.0 percent of Oconee County’s eligible voters had cast a ballot in the special Democratic and Republican Party primaries for Districts 2 and 3 on the state Public Service Commission.

Reflecting the more competitive nature of the Democratic race than normal, 36.2 percent of the ballots cast were in the Democratic Party primary, with the remaining 63.8 percent cast in the Republican Party Primary.

Those using the Democratic Party ballot were selecting among three candidates for District 3, Peter Hubbard, Robert Jones, and Keisha Sean Waites. The name of Daniel Blackman also appears on the ballot, but votes cast for him will not be because he was ruled ineligible.

District 3 consists of Clayton, DeKalb, and Fulton counties, and the candidates must live within the District they seek to represent even though voting is statewide.

Alicia M. Johnson is running unopposed on the Democratic ballot for District 2, which includes Oconee County and consists of 38 counties from eastern metropolitan Atlanta to the Savannah River and from Hart County to Chatham County.

Republican voters are selecting between incumbent Tim Echols and Augusta area businessman Lee Muns for District 2. Incumbent Fitz Johnson is unopposed in District 3.

A runoff, if required in the Democratic Party Primary, will be on July 15.

Election Day voting is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the four county precincts: Central Oconee (Oconee County Civic Center), Oconee South (Poplar Springs Baptist Church), Dark Corner (Bethabara Baptist Church), and Oconee Northeast (Marswood Hall).

Turnout Comparisons

The Public Service Commission races are the only ones on the ballot for the June 17 Special Party Primaries, making comparisons with other elections difficult.

Turnout after early voting in the May 2024 General Primary/Nonpartisan General Election in Oconee County was 10.1 percent, with final turnout after election day at 24.1 percent.

In final voting in the May 2024 General Primary/Nonpartisan General Election in Oconee County, 17.5 percent of the votes cast were with a Democratic ballot, 79.5 percent were with a Republican Ballot, and 2.9 percent were with a Nonpartisan Ballot.

As of the end of early voting on Friday (June 13) , 674 of Oconee County’s 34,515 eligible voters had cast a ballot, with 242 of those in the Democratic Party Primary and 432 in the Republican Party Primary.

The Oconee County Democratic Party has canvassed in the county to generate interest in the Party Primary.

The heaviest day of early voting was the last, June 13, with 79 persons casting a ballot.

As of the end of the day on Monday (June 16), 13 absentee ballots had been returned, with seven of those in the Democratic Primary and six in the Republican Primary.

Only 14 absentee ballots had been issued, and that final ballot could be returned by the end of voting on Tuesday.
