Georgia Transportation Department Provides Update On SR 316 Interchanges With Jimmy Daniell Road And Virgil Langford Road

***Bridge Work At Both Roads Visible Underway***

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), in its update last week on construction on SR 316 in the county, said bridge construction is actively underway at the Jimmy Daniell Road interchange and crews have begun constructing mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls to support the new roadway structure.

Significant earthmoving operations and grading activities are ongoing as the new alignment takes shape, GDOT said.

Work is scheduled to get underway soon on a base layer for the Jimmy Daniell Road eastbound off-ramp, according to GDOT, controlled blasting will take place for the eastbound on ramp, and wall work will continue for the bridge to carry Jimmy Daniell Road over the controlled access highway.

Construction is progressing at the Virgil Langford Road intersection with SR 316, GDOT reported, with bridge construction now underway.

Earthwork activities continue, and tree removal operations are nearing completion. Crews are also installing erosion control measures to stabilize the site and protect nearby waterways as construction advances, according to GDOT.

Upcoming work includes footing and rebar work for the bridge to carry Virgil Langford Road over SR 316. Pile driving is expected to get underway soon.

GDOT also released aerial photographs of the two intersections showing the status of work at the end of last month.

Pictures And Further Detail

In a news release on June 30, GDOT said drainage infrastructure installation is underway for the Jimmy Daniell Road interchange. Excavation of a detention pond for the interchange is scheduled to begin soon.

Perennial streams and wetland exist both north and south of SR 316 at the interchange.

Utility relocations are underway, including adjustments to power, gas, and water lines, the release said.

The detour at Jimmy Daniell Road is expected to occur later this summer.

For an estimated six months, access to SR 316 at Jimmy Daniell Road will be completely blocked, according to announced detour plans.

Traffic north of SR 316 will be detoured along Jimmy Daniell Road, Atlanta Highway, and U.S. 78.

Traffic south of SR 316 will be detoured along Jimmy Daniell Road, Mars Hill Road, and U.S. 78.

Eastbound and westbound traffic on SR 316 will continue during the six months of the planned detour.

Oconee County Schools has modified bus routes for the coming school year to reflect the closure.

GDOT did not provide updates on construction of the Oconee Connector interchange with SR 316 or on the Dials Mill Road Extension interchange with SR 316.

Grading and clearing visibly are underway at both sites.

Construction on the interconnected bundle of projects for Jimmy Daniell Road, Virgil Langford Road, and the Oconee Connector and for the Dials Mill Road Extension interchange is expected to be “substantially completed” in 2028, according to GDOT.

I clipped the central part of the GDOT design and inserted it in each if the two photographs released by GDOT to provide orientation for the pictures.
