State Adds Nearly 3,500 New COVID-19 Cases On Thursday, With 43 In Northeast Health District

***Hospitalizations Due To COVID-19 Increase Sharply***

Georgia recorded 3,472 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 with the release of the Department of Public Health Daily Status Report on Thursday and is in completely new territory in terms of spread of the disease.

The seven-day rolling average of added cases is 2,373.4, up more than 250 cases from the record set on Wednesday.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency on Thursday reported 1,649 Confirmed COVID-19 Hospitalizations, up from 1,570 the day before and above the May 1 benchmark of 1,500 cases, when the Agency first started reporting hospitalization data.

Confirmed COVID-19 Hospitalizations had declined consistently to 783 on June 7 but have moved up since.

In the 10-county Northeast Health District, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases reported on Thursday was 43, and the seven-day rolling average dropped to 59.6 from 61.1 the day earlier.

The Department of Public Health removed nine cases from its tally for Barrow County on Thursday, without explanation, reducing the total number of cases in the county to 523 from 532 the day earlier.

If that is a recording error, the seven-day rolling average largely would have been unchanged.

For the state, 22 new deaths were recorded in the Daily Status Report on Thursday, and none of those were at the local level, resulting in declines in the seven-day rolling averages at both the state and local level.

Additional Details

All but three counties in the Northeast Health District added confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Thursday Daily Status report.

Clarke County added 33 cases and has added 166 cases in the last week.

The University of Georgia reported on Wednesday that it was “aware” of 173 cases of the disease “among members of the University of Georgia community,” an increase of 30 cases since the University’s count broke into the news on Monday.

It is impossible to know given what the university and Department of Public Health report how many of those cases are included in the Clarke County count of 607 cumulative cases on Thursday.

Oconee County added two cases with the Thursday Daily Status Report and has added cases each of the last four days.

Deaths

The region has not added a death attributed to COVID-19 in six days, something not observed since the end of March.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency report for Thursday listed 51 Critical Care Beds in use and 19 available at area hospitals. Only 10 Critical Care Beds had been available on Wednesday.

Across the state, the number of ventilators in use increased by 28 with the Thursday report to 922, and that number was up from the low point of 796 on June 14.

The 22 deaths attributed to COVID-19 reported in the Daily Status Report for the state on Thursday included 21 deaths that occurred in the last 14 days.

The Department of Public Health removed a death originally recorded on June 4 and recorded deaths on June 2 and 3, so the actual number of added deaths was 23 rather than the 22.

The Department of Community Affairs had not released a report on Thursday when I completed this post.
