The 10-county Northeast Health District added 300 new cases of COVID-19 and one death from the disease in holiday reporting on Friday.
The Oconee County death was of an 86-year-old male without a chronic condition. The death brings to 39 the number in the county attributed to the disease.
The total number of deaths in the 10-county Northeast Health District now stands are 395, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths dropped to 2.3 on Friday from 2.4 on Thursday. The District added two deaths on Friday of last week.
The 300 cases reported on Friday followed a record 614 cases on Thursday, and the 300 new cases resulted in a seven-day rolling average of added cases of 395.7, down from 422.6 on Thursday.
The District had added 488 cases on Friday of last week, but that was not a holiday, so it will be difficult to assess the trend in cases until next week, when reporting from laboratories gets back closer to normal.
Oconee County added 21 cases on Friday and Clarke County added 48. The seven-day rolling average for Oconee County dropped from 42.4 on Thursday to 38.9 on Friday, while the Clarke County rolling average dropped from 68.6 on Thursday to 62.1 on Friday.
Hospital, School Reports
The Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Friday that the number of COVID-19 patients at area hospitals (200) increased by six from the day before.
The number of patients with COVID-19 is at a level never reported before. With the Friday release of data, 36.2 percent of the patients in area hospitals are COVID-19 patients, the highest percentage ever and 10 points higher than the state figure of 26.2 percent.
The number of ICU beds in use (64) was the same as on Thursday, and the number of adult ventilators in use (40) decreased by five from the day before.
Oconee County Schools did not issue a Weekly COVID-19 Status Report on Friday because of the holiday and because schools are not in session.
Since the last report on Dec. 18, school principles have notified parents of at least 15 individuals who had tested positive for COVID-19 at area schools.
Included are three positive tests at Oconee County high school for which notifications were sent on Wednesday and Thursday and two positive tests at Malcom Bridge Middle School, for which notifications were sent on Thursday.
The Dec. 18 Oconee County Schools COVID-19 Status Report listed 28 Active COVID-19 Cases at the schools, up from 15 the week before.
State Data
Across the state, the Department of Public Health added 5,145 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases dropped from 7,434.4 on Thursday to 7,119.4 on Friday.
The state added 49 new deaths from the disease, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths increased to 38.3 on Friday from 36.7 on Thursday.
Twenty-one of those deaths were in the last 14 days.
The state added no “probable deaths,” or deaths likely the result of COVID-19 but not confirmed as such, in the Daily Status Report on Friday.
The Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Friday that the number of COVID-19 patients (3,851) decreased from the day before, the number of ICU beds in use (2,501) decreased from the day before, and the number of adult ventilators in use (1,350) decreased from the day before.
The Department of Community Health has not issued its Long-Term Care Facility Report since Tuesday.
