State health reports on Friday listed 14 previously unreported deaths from COVID-19 in the Northeast Health District as well as 422 new cases of the disease.
Four of those deaths–one in the Department of Public Health Report and three in the Department of Community Health Report–were in Oconee County.
The Oconee County death listed in the Department of Public Health Daily Status Report was of a 78-year-old male with a chronic condition. Department of Public Health listings are of confirmed COVID-19 deaths, and Oconee County now has 43 such deaths.
Oconee County ranks sixth among the 10 counties in the Northeast Health District in confirmed COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 population, based on the Daily Status Report, just below Jackson County.
The Department of Community Health Long-Term Care Facility Report on Wednesday listed three deaths at St. Gabriel of Athens personal care home, 2040 Resurgence Drive, off Virgil Langford Road. No characteristics are given for deceased in the Long-Term Care Facility Report.
The Department of Public Health Daily Status Report also listed the confirmed death of a 79-year-old female in Barrow County with a chronic condition, bringing to 83 the number of COVID-19 deaths in that county. Barrow had reported five deaths in the Daily Status Report on Tuesday.
The Daily Status Report listed four confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in Walton County: of a 62-year-old female without a chronic condition, of a 70-year-old male without a chronic condition, of a 74-year-old female without a known chronic condition, and of an 81-year-old male with a chronic condition.
Walton County had reported four deaths on Tuesday and one on Monday, and the total number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths in the county now is 112, the most of any of the 10 counties in the District.
The seven-day rolling average of confirmed deaths in the Daily Status Report dropped to 7.0 on Wednesday from 7.7 on Tuesday. The 10-county Northeast Health District now has 495 deaths attributed to the disease.
The other deaths listed in the Wednesday Department of Community Health Long-Term Care Facility Report were at Nancy Hart Nursing Center in Elbert County, at Legacy Health and Rehabilitation nursing home in Greene County, and at Great Oaks personal care home, Park Place Nursing Facility, and The Pearl at Loganville personal care home, all in Walton County.
The Department of Public Health distributes the Department of Community Health Report, but it does not consider the deaths in the Department of Community Health as confirmed. The Department of Public Health requires that confirmed deaths be reported through its electronic system by designated filers.
Oconee County now has 17 deaths listed at the four facilities covered by the Department of Community Health Report and three “probable deaths” based on the Department of Public Health Report.
Cases
With the addition of the 422 new cases, the seven-day rolling average of added cases dropped to 443.3 on Wednesday from 476.9 on Tuesday. The seven-day rolling average of added cases has dropped seven days in a row.
Oconee County added 26 cases, and Clarke County added 81. The seven-day rolling average in Oconee County fell to 31.3 on Wednesday from 34.9 on Tuesday and in Clarke County to 82.6 from 91.7.
The University of Georgia on Wednesday did not provide its COVID-19 Health and Exposure Update. No explanation was offered.
I did not receive any messages forwarded from parents regarding new positive tests at Oconee County Schools.
The Department of Community Health listed 21 new cases of COVID-19 among residents of the 40 long-term care facilities in its report and 18 new cases of the disease among the staff.
Fifteen of the new resident case were at facilities in Clarke County, with facilities in Elbert, Greene, and Walton County also reporting new cases.
The staff cases were at facilities in Barrow, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, and Walton counties.
The Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Wednesday that the number of COVID-19 patients at area hospitals (255) decreased by 18 from the day before, the number of ICU beds in use (86) decreased by two from the day before, and the number of adult ventilators in use (55) decreased by three from the day before.
The number of COVID-19 patients is the most direct measure of the impact of the disease, and that number has decreased four days in a row.
State Data
The Daily Status Report listed 149 new deaths from COVID-19 across the state on Wednesday, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths increased to 120.0 on Wednesday from 118,.3 on Tuesday.
Seventy-four of those deaths were in the last 14 days, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths based on date of occurrence increased slightly on Wednesday from Tuesday.
The Department of Public Health eliminated three deaths previously listed as caused by COVID-19 from its archive.

The Daily Status Report also added 50 deaths listed as “probable” in terms of the likelihood they were caused by COVID-19, as opposed to confirmed as caused by the disease. The seven-day rolling average of “probable deaths” increased to 20.6 on Wednesday from 14.1 on Tuesday.
Across the state, the Daily Status Report added 8,491 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases dropped to 8,043.1 from 8,089.9 on Tuesday.
Across the state, the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Wednesday that the number of COVID-19 patients (5,428) decreased from the day before, the number of ICU beds in use (2,787) increased from the day before, and the number of adult ventilators in use (1,641) decreased from the day before.
The Department of Public Health reported adding 51,145 new COVID-19 vaccinations on Wednesday, down from 61,764 on Tuesday, and the total number of persons vaccinated in the state is now 535,920, or 4.9 percent of the state’s population.
The Department of Community Health did not release reports on the weekend or on Monday, and the Tuesday report was released after I posted on that day. I compared the Wednesday Report with the Friday Report to identify added deaths and cases at facilities in the Northeast Health District.
Across the state, the Department of Community Health reported on Wednesday that COVID-19 was present among residents and/or staff of 713 facilities, down from 715 on Friday. The decline is almost certainly reporting error, as facilities are supposed to file a report every day after they have reported a COVID-19 case.

The charts below show the seven-day rolling average of the addition of COVID-19 molecular and antigen cases for the Northeast Health District and for the state of Georgia since Nov. 3, when the state first began reporting antigen test results.
The data come from the Department of Public Health Daily Status Report and have been updated for the 2:50 p.m. Report on Wednesday.
