COVID Case Count In NE Health District Declines In Department Of Public Health Data Report; Oconee, Clarke Cases Increase

***Clarke Rate Highest This Year***

The Georgia Department of Public Health reported that the Northeast Health District added 424 new cases of COVID-19 in the week ending on Aug. 30, based on the Department’s electronic tracking system.

The Department of Public Health reported 519 new cases in the week ending on Aug. 23, 266 new cases in the week ending on Aug. 16, and 230 new cases in the week ending on Aug. 9.

The Department of Public Health reported one new confirmed death from COVID-19 in the Northeast Health District in its report on Wednesday.

That confirmed death from the disease was in Walton County.

The Department of Public Health also reported one new confirmed death from the disease in its reports on Aug. 23 and on Aug. 16. Both of those deaths also were in Walton County.

Weekly Report

Although the Department of Public Health is releasing a report only weekly, it is gathering data on a daily basis, and the weekly report includes a data file containing case counts each day, ending on a Wednesday.

The Department of Public Health switched to weekly, rather than daily, case counts in April of last year in part because of a concern that its counts under-represent the actual number of cases.

At-home test results are not included in the electronic reporting system.

The average number of added cases per day in the last seven days ending on Aug. 30 was 60.6, down from 74.1 in the Northeast Health District on Aug. 23.

Oconee County added 28 new cases in the seven days ending on Aug. 30.

Oconee County had added 22 new cases in the seven days ending on Aug. 23.

Clarke County added 180 new cases in the seven days ending on Aug. 30. It had added 132 cases in the seven days ending on Aug. 23.

The unstandardized rolling average of added cases in Oconee County on Aug. 30 was 4.3. It had been 3.4 on Aug. 23.

The unstandardized seven-day rolling average of added cases in Clarke County on Aug. 30 was 26.3. It had been 19.0 on Aug. 23.

The rolling average in Clarke County is now the highest recorded this calendar year.

Deaths

The Walton County confirmed death from COVID-19 was the 431st in that county since the onset of the pandemic in February of 2020.

The Walton County death represents 445.8 deaths per 100,000 population.

Walton County follows only Elbert County in the Northeast Health District in the number of deaths per 100,000 population. That figure is 473.6 in Elbert County.

The 1,771 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in the Northeast Health District represents 334.6 deaths per 100,000 population.

Clarke County, with 252 confirmed deaths from the disease, has the lowest rate of deaths per 100,000 population among the 10 counties in the Northeast Health District with 195.8.

Oconee County, with 108 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, has the second lowest rate of deaths per 100,000 population, with 258.4 deaths per 100,000 population.

The Northeast Health District reported 196 “probable” deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday, the same as last week.

The Georgia Department of Public Health’s 10-county Northeast Health District includes, in addition to Oconee and Clarke counties, Barrow, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, Oglethorpe, and Walton.
