***Turnout In Presidential Primary Dropped***

Kathryn Green qualified to run as a Democrat for Post 5 on the Oconee County Board of Education on Wednesday, and incumbent Watkinsville Post 5 Council Member Jeff Campbell qualified to run for re-election in the nonpartisan Watkinsville race.

Green’s name will appear on the Democratic ballot on May 21 in the General Primary and Nonpartisan Election, while Campbell’s name will appear on the ballot on Nov. 5 in the Watkinsville races.

All three of the Watkinsville Council Members whose term is up at the end of the year now have qualified, and no one has filed to run against them.

All of the incumbent Constitutional Officers in the county also have qualified, so far without any opposition.

Incumbent members of the Board of Commissioners seeking re-election as well as the incumbent coroner also have qualified, and no other candidate has qualified for those offices.

No incumbent on the Oconee County Board of Education is seeking to stay in the Post currently held, and the only competition so far for the May 21 primary at the county level is for Post 4 on the Board of Education in the Republican Primary.

Green so far is the only Democrat to qualify in Oconee County.

On Wednesday, 224 Oconee County voters cast a ballot in early in-person voting for the March 12 Presidential Primary, down from 339 on Tuesday, the day of Super Tuesday voting.

Early Voting And Qualifying

Nikki Haley suspended her campaign on Wednesday morning, leaving former President Donald Trump as the only active candidate for the Republican Party nomination.

While it is possible Haley's announcement may have led to the drop in voting on Wednesday from considerably higher turnout on Monday and Tuesday, early in-person voting also dropped on Wednesday of last week.

Early in-person voting continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at the County Administrative Building, 7635 Macon Highway, north of Watkinsville.

Qualifying continues at that same location from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday.

To date, only 6.8 percent of the county’s 32,969 eligible voters have cast a ballot in-person or via a returned mail ballot in the Presidential Primary.

Voting on March 12 will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the polling place for each of the county’s eight precincts.
