Oconee County Commissioners Given Opportunity To Review New Master Plans For County’s Existing And Proposed Parks

***First Item On Goal Setting Meeting Agenda***

Oconee County Commissioners got a preview last week of master plans for the county’s four existing parks and two planned new parks--one at the current Land Application System site on Rocky Branch Road and the other on the Middle Oconee River.

The plans will be before the county’s Recreation Advisory Committee later this month and then back before the Board of Commissioners, probably early next year, for adoption.

Oconee County Releases List Of Road Repaving Projects To Be Funded If TSPLOST Passes On Nov. 8

***Early Voting Ahead Of 2018 But Behind 2020***

With little fanfare, Oconee County last week released a list of road projects that will be funded over the next five years if voters approve the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax referendum on the Nov. 8 ballot.

With current funding, County Administrator Justin Kirouac told the County Commissioners at their Goal Setting meeting on Thursday, the county will spend $2.5 million per year to pave 87 road projects or segments.

COVID-19 Cases At Area Hospitals Decline, As Do Case Counts In Northeast Health District

***Oconee And Clarke Transmission Rates Unchaged***

The Georgia Hospital Association and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency reported on Friday that area hospitals had 11 COVID-19 patients, down from 15 last Friday.

The number of ICU beds in use on Friday was 72, down from 76 a week earlier, and the number of adult ventilators in use was 32, up from 28 on last Friday.

Watkinsville Council Members Want Changes To Parking At Planned Instructional Support Center For Oconee County Schools

***School Officials Says Current Plans Justified***

Members of the Watkinsville City Council said last week that they liked the design of the proposed Oconee County Schools Instructional Support Center and were delighted with the decision to build it on North Main Street inside the city limits.

Three of the five-member Council said they did object to the amounts of proposed parking planned for the front of the building and one of them wanted to alter the entrances off Main Street.

COVID-19 Cases At Area Hospitals, Case Counts In NE Health District, Up Just Slightly From Week Earlier

The Georgia Hospital Association and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency reported on Friday that area hospitals had 15 COVID-19 patients, up from 14 on each of the last two Fridays.

The number of ICU beds in use on Friday was 76, up from 74 a week earlier, and the number of adult ventilators in use was 28, up from 26 on last Friday.

Oconee County Republican Party Chair Sends Email Letter Urging Recipients To Vote Republican, Including In School Board Race

***Letter Criticizes Independents***

The chair of the Oconee County Republican Party gave indirect endorsements of the party’s nominees for Post 2 and Post 3 on the Oconee County Board of Education in an email message she sent to party members on Wednesday afternoon.

Without mentioning incumbent Republican Amy Parrish, seeking re-election to Post 2, or Republican Ryan Hammock, seeking election to open Post 3, Kathy Hurley wrote that it is important to vote for Republicans, even if they are not “the first choice.”

Strong Turnout In Early Voting; County Agrees To Sell Post Office; Planning Commission Recommends Cell Tower, Medical Offices

In the first two days of early voting, 1,689, or a little more than 5 percent, of Oconee County’s 32,806 registered voters cast a ballot.

In the May primary, only 420 voters, or a little more than 1 percent, of the county’s 32,034 registered voters had cast a ballot in the first two days of early voting.
