Plans for a restaurant in the historic home at Hog Mountain Road and Hillcrest Drive just west of Butler’s Crossing are moving forward.
Abe Abouhamdan of Abe Consulting presented a preliminary site plan and site development plans to the Oconee County Development Review Committee earlier this month that included the restaurant.
Sandy Weinel, development project engineer in the Oconee County Planning Department, who chairs the Development Review Committee, said Abouhamdan told the group that the project will move into the permitting stage shortly though no details about the restaurant were presented at the meeting.
Land also has been cleared for two nearby fast food restaurants opposite the entrances to Oconee County Elementary School and Oconee County Primary School.
Preliminary site plans for those two restaurants were submitted to the county at the end of October of last year. The restaurant brands are not identified on those plans.

The plans Abouhamdan submitted showed the project, carrying the name Jones’ Corner, being developed in phases.

The first phase is for what is called a “family restaurant” in the 3,100-square-foot existing building.
The house is known as the Abe Jones House. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The building most recently was occupied by the Yarn House, 2411 Hog Mountain Road.
The county rezoned three adjoining properties on Hog Mountain Road for Bath Family Development LLC in 2014 for a mixed use development with both retail stores and offices.
The properties currently are being offered for sale.
The meeting of the Development Review Committee was on Jan. 13. I was not able to attend the meeting but did review the submitted documents.

As of Friday, no building permits had been issued for the two fast-food restaurants to front on Hog Mountain Road across from the entrances to Oconee County Elementary School and Oconee County Primary School.

The land is still held by Stonebridge Partners LLC, according to records in the county Property Appraisal office.
In July of last year, the Board of Commissioners agreed to rezone nearly 2 acres for the two fast food restaurants with drive-through operations despite a 9-1 vote against the rezone by the Planning Commission and a letter from Sheriff Scott Berry opposing it.
At the Planning Commission, concerns had been raised about traffic created by the proposed two restaurants opposite the entrance to the Elementary School and to the Primary School and around the corner from Oconee County Middle School.
Site development plans filed with the Planning Department on Oct. 21 show a 3,806-square-foot building and a 3,328-square-foot-building, both with drive-around operations.
The plans show one new entrance and exit on Hog Mountain Road and use of the existing entrance and exit west of the existing Subway restaurant.

Hope the new BOC board will vote "no" on any further zoning requests that pose a traffic and safety hazard instead of submitting to the whims of developers.

If he is still in any way still involved in planning for the county,
he should be removed immediately.
Two fast food eateries across from the elementary and primary schools entrances is C-R-A-Z-Y!! If the Planing Commission voted 9-1 No, why in the heck would the county planning staff and commissioners go against the Planning Commission and approve this idiocy??!! It's going to be a nightmare not just in the morning, but afternoons and on the many nights when the schools have events and parents meetings. And trust me, there are a ton of school events and parents meetings.
Also agree with the post about Abe Abouhamdan; he interacts with the county's planning staff with his own business and also chairs the Land Use & Planing Committee, it's not a good look:

It may be legal but it is not a best practice. John Daniell needs to stand up and ask Mr. Abouhamdan to serve on another county committee without any potential conflicts of interest. Animal Control, Keep Oconee Beautiful, Parks, etc. Many ways to serve in areas not related to your personal business.
And yes, this may cause some complaining, but this is on the website as of 2 pm Monday for Land Use committee member terms:

I agree with previous comments that the various county committee/commission websites should have their meeting minutes and agendas on their specific websites, one-stop shop. Good government websites are intuitive, not hunt and peck.
