The Department of Public Health, in Tuesday’s Daily Status Report, listed 10 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the Northeast Health District, a record number for a single day, with four of those deaths in Athens-Clarke County.
The Northeast Health District also added 294 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, also a record, with 154 of those in Clarke County.
Every county in the 10-county District except Oglethorpe County added cases. Oconee County added eight.
In the last week, Oconee County has added 35 cases while Clarke County has added 506. The University of Georgia started classes the week before last.
Prior to the 10 deaths reported on Tuesday, the previous high number for a single day had been seven, reported by the Department of Public Health in the Daily Status Report on June 2. The daily total since that time had never gone above five.
Deaths In Six Counties
Six of the 10 counties in the Northeast Health District recorded a death on Tuesday: Barrow, Greene, Jackson, Oglethorpe, Walton, and Clarke.
The 10 deaths in the 10-county Northeast Health District accounted for nearly a tenth of the 105 deaths reported in the entire 159 Georgia counties on Tuesday.
The seven-day rolling average of added deaths in the Department of Public Health report for the Northeast Health District increased to 2.6 on Tuesday from 1.9 on Monday.
The Clarke County deaths are in addition to the four nursing home deaths in the county reported by the Department of Community Health on Thursday, Friday and Monday.
The Department of Community Health, in its Long-Term Care Facility Report on Tuesday, reported five additional COVID-19 Positive Staff at Northeast Health District facilities: one at a nursing home in Elbert County, one at a nursing home in Morgan County, and three at a nursing home in Oglethorpe County.
The Georgia Hospital Association and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday reported that area hospitals had 104 COVID-19 patients, up from 101 on Monday, 61 ICU Beds In Use, up from 56 on Monday, and 27 ventilators in use, the same as on Monday.
The Department of Public Health reported that 5.3 percent of the molecular tests reported electronically to the Department for Oconee County had been positive, up from 0 percent on Monday. For Clarke County, 24.1 percent of the tests were positive, up from 14.8 on Monday.
Deaths
The four deaths in Clarke County were of a 51-year-old female with a chronic condition, a 66-year-old female with a chronic condition, a 78-year-old male without a known chronic condition, and an 85-year-old female, also without a known chronic condition. Clarke County now has 30 COVID-19 deaths listed in the Daily Status Report.
The Barrow County death, the 38th in the county listed in the Daily Status Report, was of a 78-year-old female without a known chronic condition.
The Greene County death was of an 84-year-old female without a known chronic condition. Greene County has 17 death attributed to COVID-19 in the Daily Status Report.
Jackson County recorded the death of an 81-year-old male without a known chronic condition, the 26th COVID-19 death in the county listed in the Department of Public Health report.
The two Oglethorpe deaths listed in the Tuesday Daily Status Report were of a 58-year-old male with a chronic condition and of an 83-year-old male without a know chronic condition. These were the 10th and 11th deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the county by the Department of Public Health.
Walton County’s death was of an 84-year-old male with a chronic condition, bringing the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the county in the Daily Status Report to 48.
State Data
Across the state on Tuesday, the 105 deaths attributed to COVID-19 were two fewer than a week ago, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths dropped to 68.9 from 69.1 on Tuesday.
Sixty-three of those deaths occurred in the last 14 days, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths dated by time of occurrence increased on Tuesday.
The Department of Public Health reported that it eliminated from Tuesday’s Daily Status Report four deaths it had previously listed as attributed to COVID-19.
The Daily Status Report listed 2,287 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Monday, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases increased to 2,113.0 on Tuesday from 2,105.7 on Monday.
The seven-day rolling average of added molecular tests decreased again on Tuesday and is at its lowest level since July 12.
Of the molecular tests reported to the Department of Public Health through its electronic system, 7.7 percent on Tuesday were positive, down from 10.9 percent on Monday.
The Department of Community Health listed 640 long-term care facilities in the state with COVID-19 among their residents and/or staff, the same number as on Monday.
The Georgia Hospital Association and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday reported that hospitals across the state had 1,916 COVID-19 patients, down from 1,929 on Monday, 2,498 ICU Beds In Use, up from 2,389 on Monday, and 1,055 ventilators in use, down from 1,082 on Monday.
