The Northeast Health District Added 272 New COVID-19 Cases; Number Of COVID-19 Patients In Area Hospitals Continues To Climb

***Clarke County Nursing Home Reports Three Deaths***

The Department of Public Health reported 155 confirmed COVID-19 cases based on molecular tests in the Northeast Health District on Tuesday and 177 cases based on antigen tests.

The Department of Public Health did not report any new COVID-19 deaths in the 10-county Northeast Health District, but the Department of Community Health reported four new deaths, three of them at a Clarke County nursing home and the fourth at a personal care home in Walton County.

The Clarke County deaths were at PruittHealth–Athens Heritage nursing home, the first deaths from COVID-19 at that facility. The fourth death was at The Retreat at Loganville, which previously has reported four other deaths from the disease.

The Department of Community Health also listed 12 new cases of COVID-19 among residents of the 38 long-term care facilities in the Northeast Health District with the disease among residents and/or staff.

All 12 of those new cases were in Clarke County. PruittHealth–Athens Heritage reported seven new resident cases, as it had on Monday. The Oaks Athens Skilled Nursing reported five new cases.

The Department of Community Health also reported five new cases among staff at those 38 homes. Four were at The Oaks Athens Skilled Nursing, and one was at Plaza Person Care Center at Talmage Terrace, also in Clarke County.

The Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Tuesday that the number of COVID-19 patients at area hospitals (152) increased by two from the day before, that the number of ICU beds in use (64) decreased by one from the day before, and that the number of adult ventilators in use (32) increased by two from the day before.

The number of COVID-19 patients is the highest is has been since these data were firsts reported on July 1.

Cases And Tests

Every county in the Northeast Health District added cases based on molecular tests, with Oconee County adding five and Clarke County adding 38.

Every county except Greene also added cases based on the rapid antigen test, with Oconee County adding 12 cases and Clarke County adding 22.

The seven-day rolling average of combined cases for Oconee County on Tuesday was 16.9, down from 17.0 on Monday, and the Tuesday figure was 65.9 in Clarke County, up from 64.9 on Monday.

Across the whole District, the seven-day rolling average of added molecular cases dropped from 227.9 on Monday to 225.6 on Tuesday, but the seven-day rolling average of added cases based on the antigen tests increased from 57.1 on Monday to 58.7 on Tuesday.

Combined, the seven-day rolling average of added cases, regardless of test, was 284.3 on Tuesday compared with 285.0 on Monday.

The seven-day rolling average of added deaths–based solely on the Department of Public Health count–held steady at 1.4 on Tuesday.

State Data

Across the state, the Department of Public Health reported 3,709 new COVID-19 cases based on molecular tests on Tuesday, and the seven-day rolling average increased to 3,953.9 on Tuesday from 3,837.1 on Monday.

The Department of Public Health also listed 2,007 cases based on antigen tests, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases based on that test dropped to 1,333.4 on Tuesday from 1,351.1 on Monday.

The number of COVID-19 deaths listed in the Tuesday Daily Status Report was 20, and the seven-day rolling average of added confirmed deaths was 34.0, down from 34.4 on Monday.

Twelve of the 20 added deaths occurred in the last 14 days, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths based on date of the death increased on Tuesday from Monday.

The Department of Public Health also reported two new “probable deaths” from the disease, and the seven-day rolling average of added “probable deaths” dropped to 18.4 on Tuesday from 24.3 on Monday.

Across the state, the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Tuesday that the number of COVID-19 patients (2,614) increased from the day before, the number of ICU beds in use (2,523) increased from the day before, and the number of adult ventilators in use (882) increased from the day before.

The number of COVID-19 patients is the highest it has been since Aug. 17.

The Department of Community Health listed 663 long-term care facilities across the state with COVID-19 among their residents and/or staff on Monday, up from 662 on Monday.
