COVID Case Counts In Northeast Health District Show Sharp Increase Over Last Two Weeks

***Oconee And Clarke Report Increases***

The Georgia Department of Public Health reported that the Northeast Health District added 224 new cases of COVID-19 in the two weeks ending on Aug. 2, based on the Department’s electronic tracking system.

The Department of Public Heath did not issue a report last week, and the number of cases added in the  week ending on July 19 had been 63.

The Department of Public Health reported one new confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in the Northeast Health District in its report on Wednesday.

The Department of Public Health had not reported any new deaths from the disease in the week ending July 19 or the week ending July 12.

Weekly Report

Although the Department of Public Health is releasing a report only weekly, it is gathering data on a daily basis, and the weekly report includes a data file containing case counts each day, ending on a Wednesday.

The Department of Public Health switched to weekly, rather than daily, case counts in April of last year in part because of a concern that its counts under-represent the actual number of cases.

At-home test results are not included in the electronic reporting system.

The Department of Public Health announced it was not releasing a report last Wednesday to allow for a system update.

The average number of added cases per day in the last 14 days ending on Aug. 2 in the Northeast Health District was 16.0, up from 9.0 on July 19.

Oconee County added 22 new cases in the 14 days ending on Aug. 2.

Oconee County had added four new cases in the week ending on July 19.

Clarke County added 74 new cases in the 14 days ending on Aug. 2. It had added 18 cases in the week ending on July 19.

The unstandardized rolling average of added cases in Oconee County on was Aug. 2 was 1.9. It had been 1.3 on July 26 and 0.7 on July 19.

The unstandardized seven-day rolling average of added cases in Clarke County on Aug. 2 was 5.1. It had been 4.9 on July 26 and 3.3 on July 19.

Deaths

The confirmed death from COVID-19 reported in the Daily Status Report on Aug. 2 was in Oglethorpe County, the 62nd confirmed death from the disease in that county since the onset of the pandemic on February of 2020.

The death represents 418.2 deaths per 100,000 population in the county.

The Northeast Health District now has 1,768 confirmed deaths from COVID-19, or 333.5 deaths per 100,000 population.

Clarke County, with 252 confirmed deaths from the disease, has the lowest rate of deaths per 100,000 population among the 10 counties in the Northeast Health District with 195.8.

Oconee County, with 108 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, has the second lowest rate of deaths per 100,000 population, with 256.0 deaths per 100,000 population.

The Northeast Health District reported 196 “probable” deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday, the same as two weeks earlier.

The Georgia Department of Public Health’s 10-county Northeast Health District includes, in addition to Oconee and Clarke counties, Barrow, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, Oglethorpe, and Walton.
