Open House Scheduled For Tuesday On Federally Funded Transportation Projects In Oconee County

***Comments Sought On 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan***

MACORTS, the federal metropolitan transportation planning organization for Oconee County, is holding an Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 20) at the Oconee Community Center at Oconee Veteran’s Park to give citizens a chance to comment on the proposed 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan.

That plan lists 33 priority transportation projects that will involve federal funding, including seven in Oconee County.

All of the remaining projects are in Clarke County except for one, which is in Madison County.

The three counties make up the Madison Athens-Clarke Oconee Regional Transportation Study (MACORTS), which is tasked with prioritizing transportation projects that receive federal transportation funding. The money flows through the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The seven projects in Oconee County that are on the “unconstrained project” list are those that the planners consider to be most important in providing “solutions to address the identified needs without considering cost and available revenues.”

Included are three interchange improvements on SR 316, at Jimmy Daniell Road, the Oconee Connector, and Virgil Langford Road.

Also on the list is an extension of Bishop Farms Parkway from Experiment Station Road to New High Shoals Road, the bridge over Barber Creek at Clotfelter Road, and a widening of SR 186 (High Shoals Road) and SR 24 (U.S. 441) from the Apalachee River to the Watkinsville Bypass.

The seventh item on the list is the proposed Watkinsville Truck Bypass, intended to relieve the flow of truck traffic through Watkinsville.

No route is shown for that bypass.

MACORTS Action

The draft of the Metropolitan Transportation Plan was approved by the MACORTS Technical Coordinating Committee on July 31 and by the group's Policy Committee on Aug. 14.

The first Open House will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Athens-Clarke County Planning Department Auditorium, 120 W Dougherty Street, Athens.

The second will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Madison County Senior Center, 1265 GA-98, Danielsville.

The third will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Community Center at Oconee Veterans Park, 3500 Hog Mountain Road.

Citizens also can visit the project webpage to review and comment online.
