Oconee County Democrats Join In Protests In Athens Against Strikes In Venezuela; Oconee Republican Party Facebook Page Includes Praise

***Two Rallies Planned By Democrats***

The Oconee County Democratic Committee announced on Sunday afternoon that it is joining two protests on Monday in Athens of Saturday’s aerial invasion of Venezuela and capture of its president, Nicolas Maduro.

The “Hands Off Venezuela” protests are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the corner of Alps Road and Baxter Streets and at 4 p.m. in downtown Athens outside the UGA Arch on Broad Street.

A news release from the Oconee County Democratic Committee said “The protests are a response to the Trump administration’s unauthorized military attack on Venezuela’s capitol...and its announced plans to take over and ‘run’ that country for an indefinite period of time.”

The Oconee County Republican Party Facebook page on Sunday evening contained only one reference to the action by the Trump administration against Venezuela.

That reference is a repost of a statement by Insurance Commissioner John King, a Republican who is seeking reelection and who spoke before the Oconee County Republican Party on Dec. 1.

“Maduro is a cartel gangster and drug trafficker, not a legitimately elected president,” King posted. “For years now, he’s oppressed Venezuelans, targeted Americans with lethal drugs, and given our adversaries a safe harbor.”

“I’m grateful to President Trump, Secretary (Marco) Rubio, and our brave troops for bringing this thug to justice,” the statement continued. “Other leaders in our hemisphere should take note. Stop protecting cartels and criminals.”

Other Details

The news release by the Oconee County Democratic Committee said that it was joining a “regional coalition of citizens groups” that includes Indivisible GA 10, based in Athens, Indivisible Boldly Blue, based in Monroe, Democratic Committees of Athens-Clarke County, Barrow County, and Madison County, the UGA Young Democrats, the Athens Area Democratic Socialists, and the GA United Campus Workers UGA.

“Neither the Trumps administration’s military attack on Venezuela, nor its announced plans to occupy that country, were authorized by the United States Congress as required by the U.S. Constitution,” the news reads.

Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican, criticized the attacks on Venezuela on Sunday, calling for a focus on domestic policy during NBC's Meet the Press, according to Fox News.

"My pushback here is on the Trump administration that campaigned on Make America Great Again that we thought was putting America first,” she is quoted as saying. “I want to see domestic policy be the priority that helps Americans afford life after four disastrous years of the Biden Administration.”

Oconee County Republican Party Chair Kathy Hurley does send out email messages to a listserv she maintains. I have stopped receiving those messages.
