Northeast Health District Adds 107 Confirmed COVID-19 Cases But No Deaths In Sunday Department Of Public Health Report

***Hispanics Over-Represented In Cases In Oconee, Clarke Counties***

The Northeast Health District added 107 confirmed COVID-19 cases based on molecular tests with release of the Department of Public Health Daily Status Report on Sunday. The Daily Status Report listed no new confirmed deaths attributed to the disease.

The seven-day rolling average of added cases in the District increased to 135.9 on Sunday from 132.3 on Saturday.

Every county in the 10-county District added at least one case. Oconee County added 12 cases and Clarke County added 16. In both counties, the seven-day rolling average of added cases increased on Sunday from Saturday.

The Daily Status Report eliminated previously listed cases based on antigen rapid tests on Sunday, including two in Oconee County, but the seven-day rolling average of added cases increased to 24.6 on Sunday from 24.1 on Saturday because the Daily Status Report had eliminated 4 cases on Sunday of last week.

The seven-day rolling average of added deaths in the Northeast Health District remained unchanged at 1.4. The Daily Status Report had listed no deaths on last Sunday as well.

The Daily Status Report did list one probable death from COVID-19–in Elbert County–but provided no details on the deceased.

The Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Sunday that the number of COVID-19 patients at area hospitals (79) decreased by two from the day before, that the number of ICU beds in use (63) decreased by two from the day before, and that the number of adult ventilators in use (30) was unchanged from the day before.

Ethnicity And Race

The Department of Public Health has data on the ethnicity of about a quarter of the confirmed cases in both Clarke and Oconee counties and on the race of more than 80 percent of the cases in both counties.

In Oconee County, 8.7 percent of the cases as of Sunday for which data on ethnicity is available were of people who were labeled as Hispanic. In Clarke County that figure was 16.0 percent.

In Oconee County, 6.2 percent of the cases were for African-Americans, while in Clarke County the figure was 20.5 percent.

Based on the most recent census projections, 4.4 percent of the population in Oconee County is Hispanic and 5.2 percent is African-American. So Hispanics and African-Americans seem to be over-represented among the cases of COVID-19 in Oconee County, given the available data.

In Clarke County, 10.4 percent of the population is Hispanic and 28.3 percent is African-American. So Hispanics seem to be over-represented among the cases while African-Americans are under-represented.

State Data

Across the state, the Daily Status Report on Sunday listed 1,700 new confirmed cases based on molecular tests, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases dropped to 2,343.0 on Sunday from 2,390.4 on Saturday.

The state also added 371 cases bases on antigen tests, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases based on that test dropped to 698.6 on Sunday from 712.7 on Saturday.

The state added four deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the Sunday Daily Status Report, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths increased to 24.0 on Sunday from 23.9 on Saturday.

Two of those deaths were in the last 14 days, and the Department of Public Health eliminated one of the deaths it recorded Saturday as occurring on Nov. 27.

The state added 15 probable deaths, and the seven-day rolling average of added probable deaths dropped from 13.4 on Saturday to 13.3 on Sunday.

The Department of Community Health did not issue a Long-Term Care Facility Report on Sunday.
