Northeast Health District Adds Five COVID-19 Deaths In Monday Health Department Reports, Two Of Those In Clarke County

***Area Hospitals Show Increased Demands From COVID-19 Spread***

The Department of Public Health and the Department of Community Health reported five deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the Northeast Health District on Monday, two of them in Clarke County.

The Department of Public Health also reported 107 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the 10- county Northeast Health District, pushing up the seven-day rolling average of added cases to 131.7 from 121.1 on Sunday. That rolling average has now increased each of the last seven days.

Area hospitals reported strain from the progression of the disease.

The Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Monday that the number of COVID-19 patients at area hospitals (84) increased by five from the day before, that the number of ICU beds in use (66) increased by three from the day before, and that the number of adult ventilators in use (29) increased by two from the day before.

The death in Clarke County listed in the Department of Public Health Daily Status report was of a 68-year-old female without a chronic condition.

The Clarke County death listed in the Department of Community Health Long-Term Care Facility Report on Monday was at PruittHealth–Grandview nursing home and is the 13th COVID-19 death reported at that facility. 

The Long-Term Care Facility Report does not list characteristics of the deceased.

Two of the other deaths listed in the Long-Term Care Facility report were two at Magnolia Estates personal care home in Elbert County, and another was at Hill Haven Nursing Home in Jackson County.

The Department of Public Health distributes the Department of Community Health Report but does not automatically consider COVID-19 deaths reported by the long-term care facilities as confirmed COVID-19 deaths.

The seven-day rolling average of added confirmed deaths in the Daily Status Report increased to 1.4 on Monday from 1.3 on Sunday.

Confirmed Cases

Each of the counties in the Northeast Health District added confirmed cases based on molecular tests in the Daily Status Report, with Oconee County adding seven cases and Clarke County adding 28. In both counties, the seven-day rolling average of added cases increased.

The Northeast Health District actually lost two cases based on the less reliable rapid antigen tests, and the seven-day rolling average of added antigen cases dropped to 49.1 on Monday from 49.9 on Sunday.

Three cases were subtracted from the Clarke County total, and one was subtracted from the Oconee County total.

The Department of Community Health reported five new cases of COVID-19 among residents of area long-term care homes.

One of those was at PruittHealth Grandview nursing home and another was at The Oaks–Athens Skilled Nursing, both in Clarke County. One was at Northridge Health and Rehabilitation nursing home in Jackson County and two were at The Retreat at Loganville in Walton County.

The Long-Term Care Facility Report listed 13 new cases of COVID-19 among staff of area long-term care homes.

Three of the new staff cases were in Oconee County. One was at High Shoals Health and Rehabilitation nursing home in North High Shoals and two were at St. Gabriel of Athens off Virgil Langford Road north of SR 316.

Three of the staff cases were in Clarke County. Two were at The Oaks–Athens Skilled Nursing Home. One was at PruittHealth–Athens Heritage and another was at University Nursing and Rehab Center.

One of the staff cases was in Heardmont Health and Rehabilitation nursing home in Elbert County and another was at Northridge Health and Rehabilitation nursing home in Jackson County. Four of the new staff cases were at The Retreat of Loganville in Walton County.

The seven-day rolling average of positive rates for molecular tests conducted for Oconee County and Clarke County residents dropped on Friday compared with a week earlier.

State Data

The Department of Public Health reported 18 new deaths from COVID-19 across the state on Monday, with 14 of them in the last 14 days. The Department also eliminated one death previously reported as due to COVID-19.

The seven-day rolling average of added deaths increased to 27.7 on Monday from 26.4 on Sunday.

The Daily Status Report did not list any new probable deaths from the disease.

The state added 1,827 new cases confirmed via the molecular test, and the seven-day rolling average of added new cases increased to 2,669.4 on Monday from 2,549.9 on Sunday. The average for Monday was the highest in the state since Aug. 18.

The Daily Status Report listed 191 new cases based on antigen tests, and the seven-day rolling average of added antigen cases declined to 10.7 from 10.9 on Sunday.

Across the state, the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Monday that the number of COVID-19 patients (1,907) increased from the day before, the number of ICU beds in use (2,556) increased from the day before, and the number of adult ventilators in use (797) decreased from the day before.

The Department of Community Health on Monday, in its Long-Term Care Facility Report, listed 660 facilities across the state with COVID-19 among the residents and/or staff, up from 659 on Friday when it released its last report.
