Northeast Health District Added 151 COVID-19 Cases On Monday And Five Deaths Attributed To Disease

***Test Positivity Rates Up In Oconee, Clarke And District***

The Northeast Health District added 151 COVID-19 cases on Monday, the smallest number added in three weeks, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases dropped for the second day in a row.

The District added a death in Oconee County and another in Clarke County in the Department of Public Health Daily Status Report and two deaths in Clarke County and one in Elbert County in the Department of Community Health Long-Term Care Facility Report.

The Oconee County death in the Department of Public Health Report was of a 73-year-old male without a known chronic condition. The Clarke County death in the Department of Public Health Report was of an 80-year-old male also without a known chronic condition.

The death in Oconee County brings to 40 the number reported in the county by the Department of Public Health since the outbreak of the pandemic in March, and the county now has a death rate of 95.8 per 100,000 population.

The death in Clarke County brings to 63 the total number reported in the county in the Department of Public Health Report, which is a rate of 48.5 per 100,000 population.

The Oconee and Clarke county deaths bring to an even 400 the number reported in the 10-county Northeast Health District by the Department of Public Health, which is 75.4 per 100,000 population.

The seven-day rolling average of added deaths in the Department of Public Health Report on Monday was 2.1, the same as on Sunday.

The two Clarke County deaths reported in the Department of Community Health Report were at PruittHealth–Athens Heritage nursing home, and the Elbert County death was at Magnolia Estates personal care home in Elberton. The Department of Community Health does not list characteristics of the deceased.

Cases, Hospitalizations

With the addition of the 151 new cases of COVID-19, the seven-day rolling average of added cases dropped to 357.3 on Monday from 376.7 on Sunday.

Oconee County added 13 cases and Clarke County added 22. The seven-day rolling average of added cases dropped from 37.0 on Sunday in Oconee County to 35.9 on Monday. The seven-day rolling average in Clarke County dropped from 57.0 on Sunday to 52.7 on Monday.

The positivity rate for molecular PCR tests performed in Oconee County on Dec. 24 was 37.9 percent, up from 22.7 percent a week earlier. The seven-day rolling average of positivity was 23.1 percent, up from 18.3 a week earlier.

In Clarke County, the positivity rate for molecular PCR tests on Dec. 24 was 23.0, up from 9.3 percent a week earlier. The seven-day rolling average of positivity was 12.3, up from 11.0 a week earlier.

The positivity rate for the entire Northeast Health District increased to 19.6 on Dec. 24 from 13.7 a week earlier.

The Department of Community Health listed 56 new cases of COVID-19 among residents of the 39 facilities in the Northeast Health District covered by the Long-Term Care Facility Report and 29 new cases among the staff of those facilities since the last Report was released on Dec. 22.

Included are 10 resident and eight staff cases at PruittHealth–Athens Heritage nursing home, 18 resident and five staff cases at Silverleaf Alzheimer’s Care of Athens personal care home, and one resident at University Nursing and Rehabilitation nursing home, all in Clarke County.

Also included is one staff case at St. Gabriel Of Athens personal care home off Virgil Langford Road north of SR 316 in Oconee County.

The Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Monday that the number of COVID-19 patients at area hospitals (232) increased by nine from the day before.

The number of patients with COVID-19 at area hospitals has increased each day since Dec. 23 and is at a level never reported before.

At area hospitals, the number of ICU beds in use (66) was down by one from Sunday, and the number of adult ventilators in use (42) increased by one from Sunday.

State Data

The Department of Public Health added 4,066 new cases of COVID-19 across the state on Monday, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases increased to 6,623.4 on Monday from 6,567.7 on Sunday.

The Department of Public Health reported five new deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Monday’s Daily Status Report, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths dropped from 40.7 on Sunday to 39.1 on Monday.

Only three of the five deaths occurred in the last 14 days. The Department of Public Health said one of the deaths reported on Monday occurred on Sept. 15 and another on Oct. 31.

The Department of Public Health reported two new “probable deaths” from COVID-19 in the Monday Daily Status Report.

Across the state, the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Monday that the number of COVID-19 patients (4,342) increased from the day before, the number of ICU beds in use (2,571) increased from the day before, and the number of adult ventilators in use (1,417) increased from the day before.

The Department of Community Health, in its Monday Long-Term Care Facility Report, listed 690 facilities across the state with COVID-19 among their residents and/or staff, up from 683 facilities when the Department last issued its report on Dec. 22.
