Northeast Health District Adds 74 New Cases Of COVID-19, No New Deaths From Disease

***Rolling Average Added Cases Down; Average Deaths Unchanged***

The seven-day rolling average of added COVID-19 cases dropped in the Northeast Health District with the release of the Daily Status Report on Tuesday while the rolling average of added deaths remained unchanged.

The District added 74 new cases of COVID-19, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases dropped to 88.0 from 91.6 on Monday.

The District did not add any new deaths, as had been the case on Tuesday of last week, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths held steady at 2.3 deaths per day.

The District did add one “probable” death, that is, a death likely caused by COVID-19 but not considered to be confirmed. That death was in Oconee County, the sixth recorded “probable” death in the county and the 78th in the 10 county Northeast Health District.

Oconee County has 60 confirmed deaths from COVID-19.

The Department of Public Health does not list characteristics of “probable” deaths, but an examination of the underlying raw data file released each day by the Department of Public Health shows that the newly added “probable” death occurred on March 10.

Oconee County added seven cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, and Clarke County added 19. The seven-day rolling average of added cases in Oconee County dropped to 11.6 from 13.0 on Monday, while the average in Clarke county increased to 12.7 from 11.7 on Monday.

Kevin Yancey, principal at Oconee County High School, informed parents of students at that school in an email at 6:32 p.m. on Tuesday that “an individual” in the school had tested positive. He had sent a similar message on Monday.

Parents have forwarded to me email messages about a positive test at Malcom Bridge Middle School, a positive test at North Oconee High School, and now two positive tests at Oconee County High School since Superintendent Jason Branch released his Weekly Status Report on COVID-19 on Friday.

The Department of Community Health did not report any new cases of COVID-19 in the 40 long-term care facilities in the Northeast Health District covered by its Long-Term Care Facilities Report. It also reported no new deaths from the disease.

The Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Tuesday that the number of COVID-19 patients at area hospitals (44) decreased by one from the day before, the number of ICU beds in use (64) increased by 11 from the day before, and the number of adult ventilators in use (36) increased by five from the day before.

The Department of Public Health has not updated its web dashboard to report administration of new vaccines since Sunday.

Eight of the 17 added deaths were in the last 14 days, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths dated by occurrence increased slightly on Tuesday from Monday.

The Department of Public Health eliminated one death it had previously attributed to COVID-19 from its archive of deaths from the disease.

The Department of Public Health added 16 “probable” deaths from COVID-19 in Tuesday’s Daily Status Report, and the seven-day rolling average of added “probable” deaths increased to 6.0 from 5.9 on Monday.

While the Department of Public Health did not update its web dashboard to report administration of new vaccines on Tuesday, it did report shipment of an additional 156,950 new doses of the vaccine.

As of Tuesday, 94.8 percent of the allocated doses had been shipped.
