COVID-19 Case Count In Northeast Health District Increases For Two Weeks Running

***Both Oconee And Clarke Report Jumps In Cases***

The Georgia Department of Public Health reported that the Northeast Health District added 266 new cases of COVID-19 in the week ending on Aug. 16, based on the Department’s electronic tracking system.

The Department of Public Health reported 230 new cases in the week ending on Aug. 9 and 224 in the two weeks ending on Aug. 2.

The Department of Public Health reported one new confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in the Northeast Health District in its report on Wednesday.

That confirmed death from the disease was in Walton County.

The Department of Public Health reported no new deaths from the disease a week ago.

Weekly Report

Although the Department of Public Health is releasing a report only weekly, it is gathering data on a daily basis, and the weekly report includes a data file containing case counts each day, ending on a Wednesday.

The Department of Public Health switched to weekly, rather than daily, case counts in April of last year in part because of a concern that its counts under-represent the actual number of cases.

At-home test results are not included in the electronic reporting system.

The average number of added cases per day in the last seven days ending on Aug. 16 in the Northeast Health District was 38.0, up from 32.9 on Aug. 9 and up from 16.0 in the two weeks ending Aug. 2.

The Department of Public Health did not issue a report on July 26 to allow for a system update.

Oconee County added 24 new cases in the seven days ending on Aug. 16.

Oconee County had added 11 new cases in the seven days ending on Aug. 9.

Clarke County added 67 new cases in the seven days ending on Aug. 16. It had added 47 cases in the seven days ending on Aug. 9.

The unstandardized rolling average of added cases in Oconee County on Aug. 16 was 3.3. It had been 1.7 on Aug. 9.

This rolling average this past week was the highest it has been since Feb. 25, when it was 3.6 cases.

That average had been 0.3 as recently as July 8.

The unstandardized seven-day rolling average of added cases in Clarke County on on Aug. 16 was 10.0. It had been 7.3 on Aug. 9.

The rolling average in Clarke county was 10.1 on Aug, 11, but the last time before that it had reached that high was Feb. 27, when it was 10.0, down from 10.9 the day earlier.

That average had been 1.1 cases per day on July 6.

Deaths

The Walton County confirmed death from COVID-19 was the 429th in that county since the onset of the pandemic in February of 2020.

The Walton County death represents 443.8 deaths from COVID-19 per 100,000 population.

Walton County follows only Elbert County in the Northeast Health District in the number of deaths per 100,000 population. That figure is 473.6 in Elbert County.

The 1,769 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in the Northeast Health District represents 333.7 deaths per 100,000 population.

Clarke County, with 252 confirmed deaths from the disease, has the lowest rate of deaths per 100,000 population among the 10 counties in the Northeast Health District with 195.8.

Oconee County, with 108 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, has the second lowest rate of deaths per 100,000 population, with 256.0 deaths per 100,000 population.

The Northeast Health District reported 196 “probable” deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday, the same as last week.

The Georgia Department of Public Health’s 10-county Northeast Health District includes, in addition to Oconee and Clarke counties, Barrow, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, Oglethorpe, and Walton.
