Addition of 625 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Northeast Health District Pushes Up Seven-Day Rolling Average Of Added Cases To New Record

***One Death Added; COVID Patients At Hospital Increase***

The Northeast Health District added 625 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, pushing up the seven-day rolling average of added cases to a new high of 412.6 cases per day. Fifty-six of those new cases were in Oconee County, and 100 were in Clarke County.

The Northeast Health District also added one death in the Department of Public Health Daily Status Report. The Department of Community Health did not list any deaths in its Thursday Long-Term Care Facility Report.

The death listed in the Daily Status Report was of a 49-year-old male in Jackson County with a chronic condition.

That death brings to 63 the number in Jackson County attributed to COVID-19 based on the Department of Public Health tally and to 406 in the Northeast Health District as a whole.

The seven-day rolling average of added deaths based on the Department of Public Health Daily Status Report was 1.7 on Thursday, down from 2.4 on Wednesday. The District had recorded six deaths on Thursday a week ago.

The Daily Status Report also listed a “probable death” from the disease in Clarke County on Thursday. The Daily Status Report does not list characteristics of the “probable deaths.” 

The total number of listed “probable deaths” in the Northeast Health District remained unchanged at 41 on Thursday because a death recorded in Elbert County was removed from the list.

Cases, Hospital Report

The addition of the 625 cases in the Daily Status Report was made up of 528 confirmed cases based on molecular tests and 97 cases based on antigen tests. The seven-day rolling average of 412.6 is up from 411.0 on Wednesday.

With the addition of the 56 cases in Oconee County, the seven-day rolling average was 40.0, down from 42.1 on Wednesday, while the addition of the 100 cases in Clarke County resulted in a seven-day rolling average of 67.4, up from 63.6 on Wednesday.

The Department of Community Health on Thursday listed 10 new cases of COVID-19 among residents of the 39 facilities in the Northeast Health District covered by its Report and 10 new cases of the disease among staff of those facilities.

Four of the new resident cases and one of the staff cases were at St. Gabriel of Athens personal care home off Virgil Langford Road north of SR 316, and one of the staff cases was at Plaza Personal Care Center at Talmage Terrace in Athens-Clarke County.

The other resident cases were at facilities in Barrow, Greene and Madison counties, and the remaining staff cases were at facilities in Barrow and Madison counties.

The Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Thursday that the number of COVID-19 patients at area hospitals (246) increased by eight from the day before, the number of ICU beds in use (67) increased by one from the day before, and the number of adult ventilators in use (47) decreased by four from the day before.

The number of COVID-19 patients at area hospitals has increased each day since Dec. 23 and at 246 is the highest level ever recorded.

State Data

The state added 12,090 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, a new record, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases increased to 7,054.1 from 6,847.0 on Wednesday.

The Department of Public Health reported 68 new deaths from the disease, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths increased to 38.7 on Thursday from 36.7 on Wednesday.

Only 20 of those added deaths occurred in the last 14 days.

The Department of Public Health eliminated four deaths previously listed as being caused by COVID-19 and added 24 deaths listed as “probable deaths” from COVID-19. The seven-day rolling average of added “probable deaths” increased to 12.4 on Thursday from 10.4 on Wednesday.

Across the state, the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported on Thursday that the number of COVID-19 patients (4,578) increased by 18 from the day before, the number of ICU beds in use (2,632) increased by 13 from the day before, and the number of adult ventilators in use (1,509) increased by 107 from the day before.

The Department of Community Health, in its Thursday Long-Term Care Facility Report, listed 698 facilities across the state with COVID-19 among their residents and/or staff, up from 696 facilities on Wednesday.
