Republicans, Led By Trump, Dominated Oconee County Voting On Tuesday

***Yalamanchili Wins In Oconee And Clarke***

Former President Donald Trump improved his vote percentage in Oconee County on Tuesday by 1.6 percentage points over 2020 and ever so slightly over his figure for 2016, leading a strong performance by Republican candidates in the county.

Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Collins improved his percentage in the county over 2020 against Democratic challengers, as did Republicans state Sen. Bill Cowsert, state Rep. Houston Gaines, and state Rep. Marcus Wiedower.

Republican Brock Toole ran stronger in the Post 5 Board of Education race than Republican Michael Ransom did in 2020. Both had Democratic opposition in their races.

Republican Sheriff James Hale, who had no Democratic opposition in 2020, handily defeated Democratic challenger Reginald Wade in Tuesday’s vote totals.

The three Democrats running for Oconee County offices without Democratic Party support did poorer than did party supported Katie Green for Post 5 on the Board of Education, but none of the Democrats did as well as top local Democrats in 2020.

Independent District Attorney candidate Kalki Yalamanchili carried both Oconee and Clarke counties and defeated incumbent Democrat Deborah Gonzalez in the two-county Western Judicial Circuit contest.

Yalamanchili got more votes in Oconee County, where he was strongly supported by the Republican Party, than he did in Clarke County.

Oconee County voters approved a request from the Oconee County Board of Education that it be allowed to pick its own board chair and also approved the two state Constitutional Amendments and one referendum on the ballot.

Turnout was 86.1 percent in Oconee County for Tuesday’s election, compared with 84.5 percent in 2020 and 85.1 percent in 2016.

Toole Interview 10/28/2024

Republican Toole received 72.7 percent of the vote in the race for open Post 5 on the Board of Education to 27.3 percent for Democrat Green.

In 2020, Democrat Laura Williams garnered 28.4 percent of the vote against Republican Tim Burgess for Post 4 on the Board of Education, and Joan Parker received 29.6 percent against Republican Michael Ransom.

Ransom ran unopposed for the Post 1 Chair position on the Board of Education on Tuesday, but the approval of the referendum on the ballot making the chair position a Board rather than citizen appointment negates that chair vote.

Voters approved that referendum 65.5 percent to 34.5 percent.
