Pro Costco Rally Draws Crowd Carrying Signs In Support of Wholesaler

***Hour-Long Rally Outside Epps Bridge Centre***

Twenty eight people, one with a dog on a leash, turned out around noon on Friday at the intersection of the Oconee Connector and Parkway Boulevard to show their appreciation to Costco, which has been steadfast in its support of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program.

The rally, which began at 11:30 a.m outside Epps Bridge Centre and lasted an hour, resulted from the initiative of Pam Davis of the Oconee County Democrats and Karen Covi of Indivisible 10.

Participants held up hand-made signs, most just saying generic, positive things about Costco.

Costco Cares, one sign read. Several said: We Love Costco.

Some were more specific, including a large one with only DEI printed on it. Costco Supports Workers, another read.

One person was simply waving the American flag,

In the hour the crowd was gathered, many people passed by in their cars and honked their horns, seemingly in support of Costco generally, at least.

A few people joined the group part-way through the hour, but only a few left early.

Purpose Of Gathering

In a note sent out to Oconee Democrats on Tuesday (Feb. 25), Davis asked those interested to “Join the Oconee County Democrats and Indivisible 10 to thank Costco for supporting DEI and for paying their employees a living wage.”

Davis said she and Covi came up with the idea only on Monday (Feb. 24).

According to reporting by CBS news, Costco shareholders in January rejected a shareholder “proposal urging the wholesale club operator to evaluate any risks posed by its diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, practices.”

That news story said that “Prior to the shareholder meeting, Costco's Board of Directors had voted unanimously to ask investors to reject the motion.”

According to the CBS report, the Board of Director said "our commitment to an enterprise rooted in respect and inclusion is appropriate and necessary. The report requested by this proposal would not provide meaningful additional information."

Davis credited Covi with bringing in people from the 10th Congressional District outside Oconee County.

She said people were from Clarke, Barrow, and Madison counties, all part of the 10th District.
